Cybersecurity: Combating the Craigslist Rental Scam

You've heard this one before: An active listing shows up on Craigslist as a rental. Victims are scammed out of hard earned rent deposit money and the REALTOR® ends up fielding calls from prospective renters. These scams are impossible to prevent, but you can find and flag them for removal as they happen. Here's how:

1. Log in or create an account on Craigslist by clicking the "my account" link in the left column.

CL Home

2. Go back to the home screen and click on "apts/housing."

CL Home Housing

3. Next, search the street number and street name (i.e., "629 Franquette") of your listing. You shouldn't find anything. Then click on the "Save Search" link to the right of the search box.

CL Search

4. Now you'll find yourself at the saved searches page. Under the alert column, check the box next to "off." This will turn email alerts on.

Alert

That's it! Craigslist will now email you if that address shows up in their apts/housing section. If you get a notification, go to the Craigslist post and check the "Prohibited" box at the top of the page. This will flag the offending post for removal.
