Flood Insurance Program Changes Webinar

Oregon’s National Flood Insurance Program Coordinator, Christine Shirley, will cut through the complexity of the Act to give you information you can use:

  • When to expect high premiums
  • How to mitigate high costs
  • When it may be difficult to obtain reasonably priced flood insurance

The Act has the potential to increase flood insurance costs on many, though not all, older single-family residences, second homes, commercial buildings, and residential rental properties. Certain triggers, such as the sale of a building, will cause insurance premiums to increase quickly; in other cases, higher premiums will be phased in over time.

Age-Friendly Homes in the Rogue Valley

This symposium is a local collaboration between RVCOG’s Senior and Disability Services and Age Friendly Innovators Inc. ( a newly established non-profit) and Age Friendly Innovation Associates. It has AARP Oregon sponsorship. OHSU’s ORCATECH (Oregon Center for Aging and Technology) is a collaborator as well and they will have someone on site all day to answer in-home technology questions.  The lifelong housing certification process (Jackson County is the first county in Oregon to have it) will be highlighted. We have one, possibly two by then, newly certified homes to tour at the end of the day.

The educational offerings include:

  • A  welcome by Commissioner Don Skundrick and a 5-10 minute  presentation on local demographics by Dave Toler, Director of RVCOG’s Senior and Disability Services
  • A one-hour keynote presentation by Susan Duncan, the former Accessibility Manger with the city of Bend now in private practice.  She will speak about Universal Design
  • A presentation on ‘marketing to seniors’ by Dr John Bowling who will also facilitate a reactor-panel discussion with local realtors who have a designation as senior specialists
  • A facilitated panel discussion with builders and building professionals involved in developing homes with the lifelong housing certification
  • Round Table discussions over lunch
  • A choice of three  afternoon break-out sessions. 1) Age-Friendly Bathroom and Kitchen Design  (Andre Stevenson/Kohler Co.) 2) Aging in Place Basics co-led by two local CAPS (certified-aging-in-place specialists) 3) Introduction of the “Home Assessment /Audit Tool”  (Note: everyone attending will get a copy of the tool for their own use; it is currently being beta tested) I am attaching it for your reference.
  • An end-of the day tour of the certified lifelong housing home being built in Twin Creeks
